Constant technological changes necessitate continuing education for auto mechanics. After finishing required course work, you will be placed in an internship or apprenticeship, to gain experience in a work environment. Automotive mechanic programs include courses like general mechanics, engine reconditioning, automotive brakes, steering and suspension, air conditioning, and standard transmissions. Vocational schools offer two-year programs that teach the skills necessary to diagnose and fix vehicle related problems. High schools that offer trade related classes may provide auto mechanic programs, but most dealerships and repair shops prefer applicants who have an associate’s degree in auto repair. Auto mechanics working for a dealership are privy to unique training and information necessary for newer cars. Some new automobiles will even communicate with the driver, about the nature of the problem. The technology involved with newer cars requires specialized skills and often, requires proprietary information, only found at a dealership. The most common vehicle appointments include changing wiper blades, brake repairs, installing new tires or replacing light bulbs. An auto mechanic never knows if a work day will involve one large repair project, or several basic jobs. In some larger repair operations, one mechanic will diagnose the problem and another auto mechanic will make the necessary repair. Others may be more complex and require extensive diagnostic tests, to determine the problem. Newer cars may visit an auto repair shop to have a regular service check-up or an oil change. Each day brings a new challenge in this profession. Most auto mechanics are generalists, but some specialize in vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, or chassis and suspension. An auto mechanic works for a car dealership, repair shop, or as an independent mechanic.
